Dr. Brenda Birkett

Brenda S. Birkett is the retired Dean of the College of Business and Professor of Accounting at McNeese State University. Previously, she held the positions of Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dean of the College of Business, Director of the School of Accountancy and Professor of Accounting at Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Dr. Birkett holds the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Accounting from Louisiana State University, the Master of Business Administration degree from Atlanta University and the bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Southern University and A&M College. She is an inactive Certified Public Accountant in Louisiana.
Prior to her career in academia, Dr. Birkett was an internal auditor with the Internal Revenue Service in Atlanta, Georgia and a general accountant with Western Publishing Company in Poughkeepsie, New York.
Dr. Birkett has received several awards including the Lifetime Achievement Award for Accounting Education from the Louisiana Society of Certified Public Accountants and the National Achievement Award in Accounting Education from the National Association of Black Accountants. In 1998, the Baton Rouge Chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants established the Brenda S. Birkett Endowed Scholarship Fund at Southern University. She has published in numerous journals including Issues in Accounting Education, Southwestern Economic Review, The Southern Collegiate Accountant and the Mid-American Journal of Business. In addition, she is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Institute for Certified Public Accountants, the Louisiana Society of CPAs and the National Association of Black Accountants.
Dr. Birkett currently serves on the boards of AMIkids-Baton Rouge, Westminster Scotlandville Senior Citizens Housing Board, the Westminster Foundation, Our Lady of the Lake Elderly Housing Board, ExxonMobil YMCA, The Advocate Advisory Board and Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge. She formerly served on the boards of numerous other civic organizations including the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, Volunteer Baton Rouge, Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, Credit Counseling of Louisiana, Foundation for Louisiana and Rotary Club of Baton Rouge Foundation.
Dr. Birkett is married and has two sons and one granddaughter.
